La Folie is a short documentary created as part of Winkelverhalen, a film installation composed of seven film portraits of characteristic shops in the city of ’s-Hertogenbosch. Presented at Erfgoed ’s-Hertogenbosch, the installation brought together filmmakers who each portrayed a local store, revealing how these places function as informal meeting points within the everyday life of the city.
Following the presentation of the film installation, the project became part of the Winkelverhalen exhibition at Erfgoed ’s-Hertogenbosch. The exhibition combined the film portraits with historical objects, photographs, archival materials, illustrations, and animations, creating a broader narrative about the history of seven independent shops and their significance to the cultural identity and everyday life of the city. The animations and illustrations were created in collaboration with students from the Illustrated & Animated Storytelling programme at St. Joost School of Art & Design, adding an additional interpretive layer to the stories of the featured shops. The exhibition and the Winkelverhalen project were also featured by regional broadcaster DTV, bringing the project to a wider public audience.
In this film, Julia focuses on the antique shop La Folie. Rather than simply documenting the store, the film observes it as a space where objects, memories, and personal histories accumulate over time. Within the exhibition, the portrait of La Folie became part of a collective narrative about the role of small, independent shops in shaping the cultural identity and social fabric of ’s-Hertogenbosch.
