In the heart of Heggenstraat in Maastricht, I designed the transformation of a former garage (used for storage), into a multifunctional gallery and back office that connects with the Traderspop concept store. Inside, I introduced layered sightlines and a spatial logic that blurs the boundary between front and back-of-house. Semi-transparent glass walls allow glimpses of movement and shadow, creating a theatrical backstage effect between the gallery and the store that invites curiosity while maintaining functional separation. This subtle layering adds depth to the space and reinforces its narrative potential.
Material choice, such as white metal pipes, concrete flooring, lighting lines, spotlights, and modular racks, are used throughout both the gallery and the shop. These recurring elements establish a visual identity and coherence. The design of the new counter in the store, built from the same materials as inside of the gallery, becomes a central connector within the overall composition which creates unity.
The result is a contemporary gallery that remains adaptable in use, while emphasising transparency, daylight, and material unity. The back office is no longer tucked away, but woven into the spatial experience, transforming what was once a purely functional area into a vital part of Traderspop’s architectural and cultural identity.
